  • Yep! They probably worked their ass off all their life, paid their taxes, brought us into the world. I think, it should be made compulsery that they have gas, water and electricity free
  • Poor people should get free water, gas and electricity, regardless of their age. After all just how old is Maggie Thatcher.......
  • It depends whether or not the rest of us would have to pay more for ours and how much money the pensioner has. Nothing is ever ''free''. While I appreciate that pensioners have often worked ''all their lives'', some of us are working and have lives to live *now*. We already pay a large amount in taxes in England, it's ridiculous, but having to pay more taxes to pay for others to have fuel isn't something I'd be happy with. As it is there are things I can't afford and have to save for. I would resent not being able to send my children on holidays or being able to buy something I need because I'm paying more for other people's fuel. Besides, pensioners often have more money than the rest of us. Why should a pensioner get free fuel when they have thousands, sometimes millions of pounds in their bank account or tied up in their home, when I'm still trying to pay my mortgage? Paris Hilton, Bill Gates etc will all be pensioners one day, and frankly I don't think they should have free fuel and water.
  • No. They should be given enough money to afford reasonable amounts of gas, water and electricity (and other necessities) then left to make their own decisions (until certified senile). To give them commodities instead of money is to say that we do not trust them to make their own decisions. Why should someone who is healthy not turn the gas down, and spend the savings on cigarettes or presents for grandchildren? And if something is free, a minority will waste it - leaving the window open and the heat at max in winter, filling a swimming pool in a drought, and another minority will under-use things because they don't want to "take advantage". Make sure pensioners have a decent income, then leave them to live their own lives without bossing them around.
  • I don't know about the rest of the world but UK pensioners can get huge discounts on their utility bills, not free but much more affordable. I might even go back to live there in a few years to take advantage.
  • Absolutely, i think once a person reaches pension age they shouldnt have to pay utilities. At the moment in the uk they get winter heating allowances, and if over 80 get free TV licences, the only ones who benefit are the ones who didnt work and receive income support and help with council tax etc.
  • Many do. It's called welfare.
  • Many pensioners are extremely wealthy and can afford to pay their way. On the other hand many younger people who work hard are struggling to survive. The needy from society should be helped as much as is necessary, both young and old!
  • Good question, they don’t earn a high income any more, I think pensioners discount will be helpful, but giving it away for free will surely lead to corruption and fraud, it always tends to go that direction you know what I mean.
