Parallel, with it's lower latency may one day make a return. Just wait and see.

It's possible. I think what killed the parallel interface is cost. All those extra 7 wires end up costing more money.

What killed parallel was both cost and the technology needed to sync or accuratly time multiple transmissions was starting to max out. Engineers at Maxtor really pushed the bounds of the tech (of that day) to bring ATA-133 to market. They said we could not reliably push parallel much further than that. SCSI was also set to hit Ultra 640m but the advent of cheaper and more compatible SAS kind of put those hopes in the can.

So what makes you so sure its return is inevitable? Just curious...
by Karl Plesz on September 16th, 2008
In the early 80's both parallel and serial died and came back. One kept replacing the other. Parallel hit it's peak, so serial (RS232) got faster, then serial (at the time) peaked, and parallel was revised with new speeds, features, and specs..repeat. I know this went on several times.
.
I am not sure, but could PCI-e be considered a parallel-serial hybrid?
