I always thought they were bright colors so if they escaped they would easily be spotted in that bright orange uniform.

Depends on the prison and the wardon at the time. In the jail that I used to work at there were 3 different colors: Orange for average, every day, male and female inmates, bright green for juvenile males ( no juvenile females), and yellow for trustees (prisoners who have special privledges for good behavior). The Maricopa County Jail in Arizona is home to the "Toughest Sheriff in the U.S.", I don't know if he still holds the title. Sheriff Joe Arpaio makes the inmates wear pink everything (underwear and all). Along with a neon "Vacancy" sign in the front on the jail.

Colors denote the crime status in most cases. Orange= your a normal criminal, Brown =your getting to be a worse criminal, Blue= usually for females rather then orange. Red= your a Murderer or Nut Case.

my experience was no matter the crime you wore the orange jumpsuit or 2 piece weather male or female.
