If you are shopping at a major dealer, such as Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge, etc, you will find they are not very flexible. Sometimes they will accept your old car as downpayment, but nothing older than 5 years, and it has to be in perfect condition. For a brand-new car, you could try to get the salesperson to be creative, but I think if you have something of value you could exchange for a downpayment, you would have to sell it first, to get the cash instead.

credit or debit cards, or a bankers draft, or even a check but they will want to clear it first

Bank transfer or debit card are the best. They don't like the charges incurred for processing credit card transactions. Bankers draft really need to be verified so are also a pain for them to take. Cash is Ok but in the UK they can only accept cash up to £5,000. Hope this helps.
