Why is it that if I try to swallow my saliva really fast (one swallow after the other), it doesn't work?

    The tongue can be liked to a sponge with blood vessels and nerve endings that ensures that when it is dry, it is hydrated with saliva.

    The problem with what you are doing, is that is the tongue doesn't act like a glass with a straw in it. It is not meant to be a source of fluid (by you swallowing the saliva) but itself is supposed to be receiving end of the fluid, in this case the saliva, which keeps it hydrated.
