hahah i just tried the same thing and it didnt work for me either! great question but it sounds like you're bored.
The tongue can be liked to a sponge with blood vessels and nerve endings that ensures that when it is dry, it is hydrated with saliva.
The problem with what you are doing, is that is the tongue doesn't act like a glass with a straw in it. It is not meant to be a source of fluid (by you swallowing the saliva) but itself is supposed to be receiving end of the fluid, in this case the saliva, which keeps it hydrated.
