  • My advice would be to tell yourself you will allow yourself to grieve for as long as it takes and that you are doing something to end the dog's suffering. It's a painful decision to have to make, I'm sorry for that. Good luck!
  • Everything dies. If she can't be helped; it's the right thing to do.
  • Know that you are doing the right thing for the dog and the least selfish thing for yourself. If your dog is in pain and not likely to recover or she is excessively old, you are doing the right thing. I know how painful it is - I had to make the same decision several years ago. Your dog knows how much you love her and in her own way, she will thank you for your decision.
  • You justify it by knowing beyond doubt that you have done the best thing for her. Veterinary opinion, advice and direction is vital in this. Once this is given, your responsibility is to care for your pet the best way you can. If this means ending her life, painful as this may be for you, it's the right thing. Your dog looks to you for everything, and you are the centre of her world. As such, you have a duty to do what's best for her. It's always hard, but the joy pets bring doesn't come free, and often it's in having to make decisions like this where we pay the price. Ultimately, it's wrong to leave an animal in pain and confusion so as to avoid making difficult decisions which may hurt us. We owe them that.
