It is certainly not too old. Tae Kwon Do does not have age limits. How good you become is more dependent on your dedication, effort, and teacher than anything else.

You could be 60 years old and start, so being 21 and starting isn’t too old. As for being able to get good, that all depends on you and the studio at which you are learning from. If I was to join I would check out and see if this studio has won any medals or trophies at completion and if no find one that has because that’s a sign they can perform and the teacher is a good one.

TKD is one of the many martial arts that can be started at almost any age ... from 3 or 4 years young all the way to 70s, 80s, & 90+ years old ... as long as you can pass the simple tests, you may begin and you may continue untill you advance to a master level. The school and the instructor are very important, any martial art can be ruined by a bad instructor, so be sure to learn from someone with actual skills.

No, it's really about ideal in my opinion. Old enough to be out of school and decide to take it seriously and stick with it. Young enough to still be in your peak athletic years. Honestly, people who start after they reach adulthood often turn into better martial artists than children who learn bad habits and learn to think about it as a child does.

I took my first TKD course at a Jr. College thru the county Parks & Rec dept when I was 26, and, sitting on the mat with one leg out I could only reach as far as the middle of my shin. Find a school you like and that's established; a lot of them go out after a year or two. Stretch a lot, even outside class, don't look more than one belt level ahead, and don't compare yourself to anybody else since there'll always be guys who could be stuntmen and others who don't seem to be able to string 2 or 3 moves together. I still enjoy it after 20 years because it's great exercise and you can keep on getting better.

No, not at all. 21 is a good age to start. You're only too old if you can't move (too old to DO tae kwon do). In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, there's a man in the legendary Gracie family (Elio I believe his name is) who is in his 70's and is still practicing BJJ every day, and could whoop most people's ass! You're never too old!

If you are determined no age is too late to learn anything. And I am not talking bookish, its a fact.If you are serious enough you can be good in tae kwon do. And Tae kwon do is great. I had learnt it too for some time some years back.
-
21 is a really good age to start anything like that. You're old enough to know how you learn best, and you've probably learned how to be dedicated. The biggest barrier to getting good at anything isn't age or ability, it's being flaky. ;)

you can learn anything at any age, but tae kwon do is so commercialized and worthless. ANY other martial art is better. I don't even understand how anyone can consider tae kwon do an "art of war" at all. It's so impractical. Don't get me wrong, tae kwon do clowns are fun to have around to spar with. They always try to kick you in the head first thing, and always get a shot in the nuts for their effort. Clowns. Do yourself a favor and find something that was invented to do more than kick someone off of a horse. Oh, and I've been sparring with Tae Kwon Do turds for years. Do the tae kwon do trolls want a go at me? Edit: That's right turds, keep DR'ing me for my answer. It's the only way a Tae Kwon Do wussy could actually hope to hurt me. :P

I started learning kyokushin style Karate at 40. I think you'll be fine.

Never its too late

I asked a similar question before, except i was 17 when i started and even then i thought i was too old. I put great passion and honor during my training to be the best i can be. I may perhaps never become lets say BRUCE LEE, although if you dedicate your life similar to BRUCE LEE i am sure you'll be a champion in no time. WISHING YOU THE BEST GUNS510

21 is a very good age to start, T.K.D. is fun, the question is why do you want to learn Tae Kwon do. are you into the sporting aspects of it or are you looking for a more martial aspect. Which ever you should have no problems. Good luck.
