  • There's the publishing group that used to control the Wall Street Journal and there's the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The DOW most people refer to is an index fund of 30 companies, much like the S&P 500 is an index fund of 500 companies. The list of companies in the DJIA change from time to time (based on performance) and because it's based on only 30 companies, it is more volatile than larger indicies, thus has more talk in the media because headlines can harp over monster losses and gains. (The Dow used to be referred to as the "blue chip stocks" in case you remember that term.)
