I know of no law that forbids this. after all, the police practically work for the insurance companies, anyway. making out a traffic accident report is public record. meaning, anyone can pay the cost and receive a copy of your auto accident or any other police report. why would the officer do this, anyway?

I'm sure they could, but I'm not sure why they'd do it at the scene. The only time I've called an insurance company was to verify that a driver (who came to the station later to protest a citation for driving with a suspended license pursuant to a crash) actually had the insurance he stated he did.

2nd answer Yes, its legal. It's like writing a citation for speeding to a school bus driver. would it be appropriate to notify the school board that they have a possible reckless school bus driver? i would do this for the safety of the children. Would i call an insurance company? not unles unusual circumstances were present.
