Yes they are. you are not meant to eat meat as all life is sacred.

Absolutely. The very essence of Buddhism is that you must respect all life, from human to the lowliest bug or worm. Killing animals is a big no-no. :-)

I'm not an expert but I would definitely think so as Budhists believe in respecting all human and sentient beings

Almost all sects of Buddhism recommend vegetarian diets, but the degree of strictness varies widely. In Zen (my own group), this is just a general preference... there are many people who continue to eat meat, even teachers. The Buddha himself was not strict about this: he preferred to avoid meat, and when entertained as a guest he made it known that he would not eat an animal slaughtered for his visit. But if meat was already being served independently, he would eat it. Also, the mendicant monks going door-to-door for food offerings were instructed to eat whatever they received gratefully, whether or not meat was included. The general idea is that animals suffer, and to avoid contributing to this suffering is valued in Buddhism. By the same token, most Buddhist sects avoid absolutism -- making an absolute rule that one must never eat meat is considered extreme, and extremism is generally regarded as being more harmful than meat-eating.
