  • I THINK it is FEMALE chichlids that care for their fry by putting them in their mouth, protecting them from danger. Not that this tatic would be any defense against a creature large enough to eat a adult chichlid..

  • As far as I know, pretty much all Cichlids did in their natural environment to varying degrees. However, in some such as the Angelfish, that instinct seems to basically have been bred out from so many generations of eggs being taken away, and babies reared artificially. Brichardi (an African Cichlid) instill their protective instinct upon their fry. When they breed again, the older brothers, and sisters actually help ma and pa take care of the fry! This will go on for a number of generations.
