  • It is short for 'stoppen', the German word for 'stop'.
  • Germany and other european countries use international street signs. They are symbols actually, so "no right turns" for example will not be written out in words but an arrow pointing to the right in a red circle crossed with red line. The only signs that may seem to be written in english are probably STOP and EXIT sign on highways, or informative sign AIRPORT etc. They are in english because english is becomming the international language( no more french or esperanto : )
  • Stop happens to mean stop in both German and English.
  • Stop is the command form of Stoppen. Basically, it's written that way because Stop is a German word. The fact that most people who will drive on German streets will understand Stop is a more like a bonus.
