They have no true historic place in Mythology, nor in the Necronomicon a real book... he owes much of his style to the legendary E.A. Poe, but he took his Mythos to a new level of daemons and elder gods that we could never imagine. He did love Egyptian mythology, and many of the stories bear that out. However, to answer concisely, no. There is no real connection to anything further than his own intricate imagination and deep understanding of bizarre occult practices and dark legends.

Actually cthulhu is a god that originates from the Sumerians. You can read more about them through Sumerian mythology or reading the Necronomicon which is based on Sumerian myths.
