you might not have the the right codec to play video files. you'll need to download a codec. i'm sure if this is your problem though. what file type is the movie? does windows media normally play files of that type?

Use VLC and never ever use Windows Media Player again because it sucks. The use of Videolan does not require the installation of codecs. It plays almost every single video file the first time flawlessly. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

You could also try downloading a Codec pack like K-Lite. Be advised though that some people had a few problems with these, specially when trying to remove them. But it's an easy and fast way for a newbie to get the codecs working. K-Lite Codec Pack download page: http://www.codecguide.com/download_mega.htm

You can simply run any type of format of audio or video by download and install this software name as Jetaudio. This software does't need of codec pack. Gods this question is ancient, so the original asker probably won't benefit from the answer. Your computer likely lacks the proper codecs. The most comprehensive and reliable codec pack I am presently aware of is the following: http://www.cccp-project.net/ Install that and try playing your video again, there is a very good chance it will work. If not, check back at your torrent site and see if anyone else is commenting about the torrent malfunctioning.
