What are spells? Are they the same thing as a prayers with rituals added to them?

Basicaly, yes. However some spells are nothing more then invoking a deity to do something. So yes and no at the same time.

No, not really. There is a difference. A spell is calling upon and manipulating magical forces YOURSELF to achieve an outcome. Prayer involves asking a DEITY for an outcome. Most times, a Deity is asked for assistance/guidance during a spell, though. In practice, prayer and spells merge with ritual to achieve a desired outcome.
