This is the number one reason why I never let a dog lick me even though the critter may mean well. If the pooch isn't satisfied with my pettings and the occasional hug, then tough luck. It is pretty gross.

That's nature for you. The highest source of bacteria, etc is from the mouth....not there.

Yes I think it is gross and I used to tell my dog to stop, but I have learned that I shouldn't stop them for a few reasons. 1) Licking keeps them from getting urinary tract infections 2) If I tell my females not to then when they get pregnant and have puppies they may not clean themselves and their pups. So what I do now is tell them to go in their crate or in the bathroom to do that... unless it is just a quick cleaning.

Dogs are dogs. They have an entirely different set of behaviour patterns to humans. Anybody who is bothered by an animal performing perfectly natural self-grooming ought to ask themselves whether they want a pet or are capable of properly looking after it.
