Turning your printer off will not save the ink cartridges, although it will save a little on your electricity bill. All ink cartridges fail given enough time. The contents of the ink reservoirs usually do not dry out, but residual ink around the nozzles may dry and then block the nozzles. This is a cause of many cartridge failures. Printing a page at least every week – using every colour available – will help reduce this problem. Some printers are more prone to this problem than others. If your printer performs automatic cleaning cycles when idling, you should leave it running. Few printers do this, however.
