Darker colors absorb more radiation (uv, light, infrared, etc). Darken the skin a tad (by causing a "blush from blood" and more light (UV) is absorbed causing more damage, er I mean, tanning to take place. Works best on white people. White skin has fewer UV blockers and say Brown skin. Part of the process of darking pigment in skin is that other chemicals are present which do block UV "protecting" the skin from further damage.
