There are supposedly still some kinks in the format, the media is expensive and the technology is still not widespread. Sony is the producers of movies and other IP so it must be taken into account that their priority is to protect their movies. The other Sony format, the UMD for the PSP cannot be produced at home and there are no "UMD-R" type discs.
