Should all countries be known universally by their endonyms (i.e 'Deutschland') as opposed to exonyms (i.e 'Germany', 'Allemagne', 'Alemania')?

It only makes sense to me. I don't understand why we don't do that -- why bother making up new names for countries that already have them? When I went to France, they didn't translate my name. Why do so with countries? I can only see doing that when we need to spell out a country's name that uses a different alphabet, but even then it should be the word they use.
