Few people think of the animal's death when eating meat,would vegetarianism be more prevalent if one realized the misery the animal goes through?

Probably not - but maybe I'll bring it up later when several coworkers and I go to a Brazilian Barbecue place later for all-you-can-eat meat.

I think that vegetarianism would be more prevalent, but I don't think that it will ever rule as a majority unless it is required (by circumstance or legislation).

I'm a committed omnivore, that's what our teeth and digestive system are designed for. I have been to farms that raise cattle for beef and I've visited abattoirs and seen cattle, pigs and sheep humanely destroyed for food and I don't understand your expression, "the misery the animal goes through".
