  • Well, instead of saying black crime, I'm going to specify it as gang crime, since thats what its referring to. It just happens that most people involved in gang crime happen to be black. Anyways, why more fear of gang crime? Because more crime is committed by gang members than serial killers. Theres more gang members out on the streets than serial killers. Higher ratio, higher risk.
  • We still live in a world where there is discrimination.
  • The reason is that the vast majority of people killed in a homicide are not killed by serial killers. As scary as they are, your odds of being killed by a serial killer are extremely low. You're much more likely to be killed in the process of an armed robbery or carjacking, for instance. I'm not sure what the racial breakdown is between serial killers vs. armed robbers, but I'm guessing that the percentage of armed robbers who are black is higher than the percentage of serial killers who are black.
  • Because the average serial killer is responsible for , say, 30 deaths? Gang violence and black-on-black and other minority groups crime is much more pervasive, and kills hundreds daily. Each prison in the US might hold one or two serial killers, but theres whole gang movements in EVERY prison. I know. I've been there.
  • The reason for fearing black crime is because of racial profiling. The police tend to pull over more black males for any moving car violation. They also tend to arrest black men for minor crimes such as shoplifting, petty theft and loitering. Finally they are more likely to be arrested for major crimes. The reason for this is because of the color of their skin, I believe they call that racism. So in conclusion the reason is because some police are intolerant of people of color.
  • The answer is that serial killings make up a tiny percentage of overall crime, and the majority of violent crime is committed by blacks. In fact, not only are most violent criminals black, most violent criminal victims are black as well. A better question is: why are we opposed to racial profiling? If 99% of serial killers are white males, and there is an unsolved serial killing, is it really unreasonable for the police to focus their search on white males?
  • It's not fear of black crime it's fear of violent crime. Most average middle class men don't join gangs and go shooting up neighborhoods. They're more likely to commit a white collor crime or a domestic one like spousal abuse or molestation. Serial killers are very rare with only about 30 actively killing at one time in our country. There are thousands of gang members of all races and ecconomic and educational backgrounds commiting violent crimes. That whole argument about they don't have the same educational and econmic advatages is total bull because white children who grow up poor and in crime ridden areas are less likely to join a gang. It's an excuse to be a criminal and blame someone else for your actions. And with Affirmitive Action there's even less holding minoritues back from succeding. They only have themselves to blame for what goes on in their neighborhoods and how they turn out. There was also some speculation that the cops and justice suystem practice whole sale racism. That's also bull. The reason why more blacks are arrested and jailed is because they commit most of the crimes. As to the sentencing what most people don't realize is that judes take into account a person's history to detremine the length of the new sentence. Most gang members are repeat offenders which will lead to a longer sentence. Just being in a gang is a crime and will lenghten the sentence.
  • Simple, yet f**d up answer is this: You're so conditioned to hearing about crime in black neighborhoods that it's "normal" and "expected" - women will clutch their purses a little tighter when a young black man is on the same side of the street because they're used to hearing about robberies and shootings from the black community. White crimes, when they're REALLY REALLY shocking, always has the community "stunned" that it could happen to such a "nice family." That's what I've noticed in Wilmington, anyway.
  • Are you insinuating that black people cant be middle class or average?
  • I'm more afraid of purple crime! Or even worse PINK CRIME! (you know, when homosexuals redecorate your house when you are away) (Come on, if we are going to stereotype, lets do it all).
  • I thought middle class men could be black. Is there a black ceiling or something? Most murders and crime do not involve serial killers, does it?
  • For Californians, here's why: Blacks comprise less than 7% of the state's population, but are responsible for nearly 25% of all the dangerous felonies* committed throughout the state. *Murder, robbery, etc.
  • To fear being harmed by a serial killer is in the same ballpark as getting hit by lightning. Being beaten and robbed is much more of a real threat.
  • Because the media teaches us to be afraid of it. I think these days most of our "fears" come from the media.
  • The last time I checked the statistics, which have gotten much worse since then, was that 25% of black males between 18 and 30 are either in jail, on bail, or out on probation. Consequently I am always extremely polite and respectful to the black people I happen to run into, because they are almost all at work and therefore not part of the problem. Similarly I avoid groups of young black men at any hour, because they aren't at work and might be among the 25%. There are few middle-aged middle-class men in prison, and most of those that are are in for non-violent crimes like fraud. By the time serial killers get caught, usually after three dozen victims and quite a few years, they are middle-aged; but when did they start? Hint: It wasn't "in their 50's."
  • that's a very stupid question. 0% of serial killers are average middle class men! serial killing is very abnormal, and although blacks commit fewer serial killings in total (in the u.s. africa is a different story) they commit murder, including serial murder, at a far higher rate than their relative numbers in the population.
  • I love this question. I will answer it without attempting to set you straight on all the problems the question implies in your thinking. . Answer: Blacks are statistically more likely to commit violent crimes than Whites or Asians.
  • There's one or two serial killers per century. ALL crime beats those numbers.
  • It depends on where you live. People (at least women) here in Washington are probably just as likely to fear a serial killer than a black gang member or something if walking alone down a street or whatever. In most areas however, a white diabolical serial killer is far more rare than a black impulsive criminal.
  • I've looked around the net & while reading I realized that many of these studies failed to mention one thing. Socio-ecno class. It seems like many of these minorities are subject to more overt discrimination or has more neg. sterotypes. From what I've seen Hispanics, N. Americans and Blacks have higher crime rates out of all minorities. The one thing this group has in common are broken homes (due to a history of opression or survival...I can eleborate later). These people also tend to have a history of opression. People in "stressful" situations tend to act out more. The fear is based off of the media, whch does not represent minorities in general in fairly. I think that racial profiling also plays a huge role in numbers. If one race is sterotyped more than they have a higher chance of getting in trouble. Sterotypes not only effect how people see a race but how a race sees themselves...this can affect that way they act. I also think people are more prone to report crimes commited by minorities or people with neg. sterotypes. This can cause a big circle of fear as the media only conuines to play off sterotpyes and effect how minorities see themselves.
  • you have a much smaller chance of being killed by a serial killer than becoming a victim of the multitude of other crimes that make up crime statistics.
