I'm getting married in October and have nobody to walk me down the isle. What do I do?

You must have someone you respect immensely, a co worker, a neighbour. Ask them to do it. They will be so honoured.

If you have a best male friend, now is the time to test your friendship. Make the call. He will be there.

If you don't have family, pick who'd you want to be your best man, if you had that option instead of your husband. A really good friend, someone who's been through a lot with you, just someone who you really care about.

*Nobody?* Anybody who loves you will do. Of course, it would be traditional for a member of your family to do it. But anybody who you think is a major part of your life can do it. All you need is the symbolic handing on from your past life to your future life - to reflect the fact that while you are not abandoning the old, the new life with your partner will be the biggest thing in your life. You must one or two friends from your old life who can pass you on to your new life.

Maybe start a new trend - be a vision of beauty and independence - as you walk down the aisle on your own.

It may be a crazy idea and I am making some guesses here. I am guessing there is someone very important to you that has passed on. I am guessing that there is someone in you life who is kind and a very good friend. Ask that friend if they could "stand in" for the person you would have liked to have been there. Ask someone to make a nice announcement describing in your words the person who is missing and that your friend is there in that persons honor.

walk down the aisle by yourself, proudly. let it be a symbol of leaving your life as a single woman and joining with your husband rather than a symbol of leaving a father (or father figure) behind. whatever you choose, do it with a smile and confidence, it's your day with your new husband and that's all that matters.

My cousin married a woman who's family was very religious and disapproved of the wedding. Her parents wouldn't attend. She walked herself down the isle and it was one of the bravest, more heart-warming things I've ever seen.
