  • Yes. Without tears. :-) Edit - Animal cries indicate emotional distress due to separation anxiety or grief. A large, gentle marine mammal called a dugong that lives in the Indian Ocean sheds tears when in trouble or pain. Cats are known to become depressed and be in tune with their owner’s moods. Marmoset infant monkeys cry for attention. They also cry when older to signal to an adult that they want to be carried. Animal behaviourists have long said that emotions play a big part in animal survival especially in the wild. Animals express joy, anger, and grief and other emotions that were once called exclusively human. Human tears don’t always mean sadness. They can mean joy too so we hear the phrase “tears of joy”. Human babies cry for the attention of their mothers and puppies do the same but the puppies always cry without tears.
  • My inlaws have pugs that do shed tears, apparently when they're sad, so I guess they do cry. For other breeds, I can't say either way.
  • Dogs and cats only shed tears when they have an injury or are in pain, never when they are sad. At least I don't think so.
  • Well, this really depend on how you define "crying". If it is simply the act of shed a tear, you can say that not only dogs but many other animals "cry", because they have a lacrimal gland, which basically have the function of keeping the eyes wet or remove undesired objects. If by "crying" you refer to an emotional state that make you shed tears, well is hard to say. Scientist convention is that humans are the only animals "sentient" and "capable of complex emotions". I've personally thing that when a dog is abbandoned by its owners, or the owner dies...well they suffer on their way. If this "suffering" make them shed tears ("crying") I really don't know. I've had dogs all my life and when they are hurt or in pain, they make noises but I've never seen a tear connected to the moments of physical pain.
  • I have a 2 year old chow chow who is very attached to me out of my family of 6. I have had her from birth and we all agree she thinks she is my daughter. Last night after going out I came home and as normal she was sad but glad to see me. She was laying down and had 2 wet streaks in her fur, running down the side of her eye I swear she was crying.
  • Do you?
  • I recently lost a young dog and was grief stricken. I had to put her to sleep because of her illness. I experienced deep grief and was rather focussed on my own pain. A few days after the euthenasia I noticed that my large lab mix had not been eating, and in fact had lost 20 lbs. in that short time. She and he would play together, and each evening I would spend an hour with them. It was our ritual. When I realized that the lab was not well I was in shock. I could not take the death of two pets. I thought he might have her illness until tests proved otherwise. Finally I decided to spend an afternoon with him and take hime to work. That night he started eating again. A few nights later I was sitting with him and he sighed and sighed and tears came from his eyes. He seems to be getting better and better each day. It is still touch and go. I know that our tears of grief are different than our eyes just watering. I wondered if any such tests had been conducted on canine "tears" I felt sure that night that I held him that he was crying. Since sharing this incident with others I have heard several stories of companion dogs who were so close that when one of them died, the other stopped eating and died soon after. That is why I wanted to know if dogs cry.
  • Yes, but not with tears.
  • I had a dog who I had to let go a few months ago (in fact, I'm up on the computer right now because I couldn't sleep because I was crying about him). He was old and was having a difficult time getting around, and one morning he couldn't get up at all. We tried everything we could at the vet but it was his time. I remember looking at him and he was crying because he was in pain and I know he was ready to go. He wasn't crying tears or anything, but you could just see the crying in his eyes.
  • Yes they do and it's a very, very sad sight. Witnessing it made me cry also.

  • My black lab was walking on the beach and came across some discarded open tins containing some food. I told her to leave the food but she went on ahead, the snack was just too good! so I scolded her and slapped her rear. I very rarely chastise her as she's very obedient and follows me everywhere, so she was shocked when I reacted forcefully. Shortly after when we had arrived home she rolled up in her cot, initially I thought that she was sulking, but noticed that both her eyes had watered up and streaking down her cheeks. I did not believe that dogs shed tears, but I wiped her eyes and gave her a cuddle, her whole demeanor changed, she was her old chunky self again. Do dogs cry tears... well I'm convinced mine does.
  • no, they eyes just get watery
  • I have..had two dogs, an Australian Shepard lab mix named Bear and a pointer lab mix, snoopy. They were like brothers. Unfortunately we had to put Bear down recently cause of some immune system problem so now we still have Snoopy and he does nothing but whine, whine and whine some more. I know for sure he's grieving. I actually never have seen a dog grief before. Snoopy has not eaten at all since Bear's passing. We tried all different types of new foods he's never had before, still doesn't touch any of it. Maybe its the smell of Bear that keeps him from eating but it saddens me to have to watch him grief. Everywhere i go.. snoopy follows and whines and he'll whine even if you are laying down watching tv. We play with him every chance we get and nothing seems to work and nothing seems to make him happy. I just don't know what to do anymore. I feel horrible for what he's going through..
  • Yes they do, they do whine too. My 2 basset hounds does cry or whine..
  • Yes, they do cry. Some more than others, just like human beings. Mine cries so much I have to always buy her a box of kleenex so she can wipe her tears from all the crying. She's a drama queen, you know. Animals have feeling too. Just like us.
  • I have a 1yr old purebred Boston Terrier named Ojie. He 100% cries real tears when he senses or is in trouble. Weirdest thing I've ever seen. Someday I'll post a video on YouTube of it.
  • My dog cried today. She just got her Lepto booster shot and about 3 hours later she was trying to get up on the couch (Where I was). I noticed her struggling and helped her up. When she got to where she was wanting to be she was shaking, and then I watched a tear roll down her face and onto her paw. Her little beautiful eyes have never done this for the 7 years that I have had the pleasure of her company. I didn't think this was possible until today when I saw it. Her eyes and body were conveying that she was in tremendous pain before the tear came. I hope the Lepto shot is worth my friends hardship.
  • I've had my 67 pound Pit Bull Terrier since he was six months old (now going on three years ) ... He's been babied , spoiled , and lived in the house, sleeps in my room and /or bed if he wishes .... My roommate has told me that when I leave the house; the pup will lay by the door and whine ... and whine .. for at least ten to fifteen minutes ... then he goes and gets in his bed and stays there until I come home ... at which time he acts like I've been gone for a year .. I've never seen tears ; BUT his whinning appears to be crying to me ....
  • I seen my dog shead tears twice, ones in pain and one other time, the day I put her down. I seen her depressed that day and one othe time two.

  • I believe they do. My 7 yr old dachshund was attacked by coyotes out of the blue a week ago. We were at the emergency vet clinic and after they had cleaned her wounds and stabilized her, they gave her back to us to take to our regular vet for prolonged treatment, I noticed visible tears streaming down her face. I know she was in pain, her eyes followed me all around the room though she couldn't move. She passed away the next morning during surgery. I got to see her one last time the night before around 10pm. And it was the same story, she couldn't raise her head, her eyes moving as I moved. I was bawling, and she cried too along with me. Yes, I KNOW they do cry.
  • I was scolding my Shih Tzu on Saturday for having an accident in the house. She sat down, looked up at me with very sad eyes, and a small tear rolled out of her eye, down her fur, and onto the floor. I was so surprised; I had never seen nor heard of a dog crying real tears before.
