I think it was the Staff.

It's used all over the place as a term for an internet asshole, not just on Answerbag. I don't know who coined the term without looking it up. Maybe I should. Oh, as I should have guessed, it came from Usenet, like most internet terms and phrases.

Trolls have been there long before the creation of Answerbag.

A troll is a person who posts annoying, irritating or just plain rude questions or comments purely in the hopes of getting a response, any response. My guess is the term came from fishing, where trolling is pulling a bait behind a moving boat in hopes of getting a strike rather than casting to a specific place.

Troll is an old Usenet term coming from the idea of troll fishing where you throw out your net and 'troll' for fish. When applied to the internet or AB, it's when someone (throws out a net) or says something outrageous or upsetting, something controversial just to catch, not fish in the nets, but people. They get a 'bite' from someone when a person reacts, comes back at them angrily or even with humor, it doesn't really matter. Trolls are attention whores. Most don't care what kind of attention they get as long as they do get it.
