I am with you on this. I cannot even remember not being able to read. I have always been a reader. I don't see how people miss out on reading. It's so odd to me.

To tell the truth , I remember reading some when I was small , but found it hard to comprehend - I read through self help books , but not a novel -- Though since I've been with AB , I just started writing articles for the Dateline Debate and 5 others so far - Which is shocking that I would have done that ever - Much thanks to everybody here + 5

I think it's sad because reading is one of the best ways to expand your vocabulary, your mind, and your world. The thing I find shocking is illiteracy. I cannot imagine not being able to read.
-
Mildly - not nearly as shocked as when I find some adult who doesn't know how to read, and not because of some mental disability.

It's sad to me. I don't think I'm being a snob here by thinking that those people are missing a great deal of entertainment, culture and a fulfilling experience by reading. Most people associate reading books with a boring experience. I tell most of them that to acquire a love for reading they should try to find a subject they find of their liking and grow from there. Start at a small scale and then get into more complex subjects, if they feel like it.

Reading and music are such integral parts of my life, it is hard for me to imagine time without either. In fact, I picture the ideal day and it includes my favorite chair, a great book, my iPod on speakers, my wife in the chair next to me, and my dogs curled up beside me, and a Lagavulin on the table, beside the Hershey's Special Dark and sliced apple. Oh, and it's raining on my metal roof and the day is chilly, so the fire seems toasty in the fireplace. . .

I would be SHOCKED! I would probably look at the person as if they were insane! It would also lead me to believe that they were unintelligent... Because normally you learn from reading! They would have missed out on soo much! I know a ton of people who hate reading soo much that they will read a book over a LONG period of time... (for instance back in high school) and only because they had to read it for a test! Its awful that they are too adhd to even read one book!

I actually know two old people who are both totally illiterate ... they are refugees from some where in northern Africa ... they come to the food bank I volunteer at. I am only shocked when the person is from a relatively advanced society, one with schools for the people, Like Europe or North America, or Austrailia ... when they come from one of the more primitive places on Earth, I am not surprised.

I just shocked when people say they don't like to read and don't care if they read. I can't comprehend how you get along this day and age without reading. I learn something every day and it's usually through reading. I read fiction and non fiction, all sorts of things. I am never far from a book or magazine

1) unfortunately, there are a lot of people on earth who cannot read 2) for instance you could : - read all books except for the last page - never been so interested that you must read it until the end - always find so uninteresting passages in books that you just fly over them - rather go to the theatre or to poetry and literary readings, or use audiobooks - prefer to read other things as books, for instance letters, newspapers, magazines, web pages and user manuals... 3) Anyway, I think books are still an important part of our culture, and I love them. I think it would be too bad not to read them. But I do not think we shall be reading many books in the usual form in some years from now, but rather book and other texts in electronic form. I am already reading more texts on my computer than in books, I think.
