Shouldn't national security be a liberal issue? Liberals, I thought, favor a strong national government whereas conservatives favor a less centralized national government and more states' rights.

The recent track record shows otherwise, I think, which is in keeping with the observation some have made that Dubya is more liberal than JFK was, showing a shift or flip in the liberal/conservative polarity.
At a point prior to 9/11/2001, Democrats had started most of the U.S. involvement in wars, so I read. It took Nixon, however, to extract troops from Vietnam. With Iraq, Dubya got us in and the Dems are trying to get us out. Bassackwards?

Historically speaking, this isn't accurate. The southern democrats previously supported segregation and used states' rights as an argument against ending segregation. The republicans supported a stronger central government in order to eliminate segregation. I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that it was the republican party that favored a national department of education also. It seems to me that currently, both parties favor a strong centralized government on one issue or another. There are probably only a handful of republicans (such as Ron Paul) who favor a less centralized government.
