  • I think the first pet should be a dog. Dogs are loyal pets with a good enough life span. The age should be 6-7 years old. That way they are not too young.
  • Five years old is about the right age. A gerbil or hamster is a good first pet if you want to start small. If you want another pet you could go with a dog or cat depending on the child and your living arrangements.
  • My dad bred rotts and when his kids reached the age of two he would pick a pup and make that pup the kids pet..he believed that at two the kid being assigned a particular pup would insure that the dog and kid grew up together and that the dog would be naturally protective
  • Their first pet should be a fish, if they can remember to feed it everyday, then you could get them a more entertaining pet, probably a dog,
  • I would have said a dog but dogs can be huge responsibilities. If the parent is willing to do most of the work and take care of the dog, then it could be a good one. But if the parent isn't going to participate much, I think a cat would be a better choice. They don't need the training like dogs require and they are easier on the vet bills usually. Hamsters and Guinea pigs are okay pets but there is a lot of cleaning and special feeding. Rabbits can be a pain when they chew up your furniture and electric cords.
  • Well, a puppy is great, but it's a lot of work! So, my opinion would be something like a rabbit, or perhaps a cat. My first animal was a guinea pig and i adored him! If you want your child to be responsible more so than yourself, as an adult, than i'd say around seventeen. But if you're willing, as the parent, to help out, and do some of the work, then any age above 10!
  • fish. if they do good with a fish, get them a guinea pig!
  • My dad got me these things called "Sea Monkeys" at the pet store. Stupid me thought they would grow to look like the illustrations on the packaging. Needless to say very soon after they "hatched", the litle organisms died, I was heartbroken. Whatever you do, don't get your child "Sea Monkeys".
  • The best age to give a child a pet would be around the age of 7 and the best pet would be dog. Cause at that age the child is old enought to care for the dog without help from a parent (except to take the dog to the vet)He can feed the dog, give water to the dog, brush the dog (if it needs it)train the dog and play with the dog.
