  • Actually, lots of people don't wash their hair every day -- people of every ethnicity. Many cosmetologists feel that shampoo is damaging and, unless, one's hair is very oily, shouldn't be used at all. A coworker of mine (Caucasian woman) does not use shampoo at all, and you would never know it. However, because people seem to think they know what is best for other people, many who have these habits do not advertise it. (I, personally, am jealous -- I would save a lot of time if I didn't have to wash my hair every day). Try this on for size -- a friend of mine has a doctor who told her to stop showering daily; her skin was too sensitive. She said it was very common, but people refuse to listen to her.) People pat their heads instead of scratching because scratching your head, well, scratches it. If they will be getting a chemical process any time soon (and the majority of Black women chemically relax their hair), the chemicals will burn any scratches on the scalp. Alternately, people whose hair is styled or braided (of any race) will often pat because it has essentially the same effect but does not mess up their hair.
  • Oh my gosh , and I'm trying to eat dinner - Goofy question pure and simple
  • I have to say great question but I am sorry I cant really add anything to it. "An Educated Optimist" has already given the answer that I would say is clearly the best. Oh welcome to AB as well.
  • Not everyday. some every other day. some once in awhile. Our hair drys out and gets brittle if it is washed too much ( stripping away the natural oils). There are some who will do it everyday and some who will do it once a month. It depends on how dry the hair will be and how it will look afterwards ( too dry and it will fall out, to washed and it will dry out).
  • I wash my hair every other day. My hair is long and gets dried out very easily. It's easier this way - having 2 young kids it's hard to find the time :)
  • My years in the Navy did not show me any difference in the bathing practices between the races; black, white, yellow, or red, we all washed our hair about equally often. As for hitting instead of scratching, I've never seen that as a response to an itch, but I hit my head often in response to acts of egregious stupidity.
  • I'm pretty sure they wash their hair as regularly as any other person. Maybe some people in under developed countries that are polluted like hell don't because it would just make things worse, but if it were white people living there instead I'm sure it would be the same. And hitting oneself when they itch, well I've never heard of that, honestly.
  • I remember when I used to wear braids, I would lightly tap my head if it itched so as not to disturb the braids. I would rinse it in the shower every day, used shampoo every other day. I have a white girl friend who only washes her hair every two weeks because her scalp is so dry that if she does it more often, it bleeds.
  • Asking a hair question wont make you racist. And Blacks dont usually wash their hair as much becuase african hair (and curly hair) tends to become dry pretty easily. As far as I know it's because the natural oils in your hair have a hard time traveling through all the curls and may only make it a few inches. So blacks may wash their hair once a week to once every month. Also, black women (and some men) who chemically striaghten their hair can't afford to wash their hair because it wouldnt keep their hair striaght. Some hairstyles (such as weaves or freezes) can make your scalp itch and scracthing it (like someone said earlier) would cause flaks or mess up the braids or roots so tapping at your scalp is alot easir and doesnt leave as much damage. Realize that blacks have different kinds of hair (from wavy to extreame curls) and the hairstyles are pretty endless...but many of them are not good for the scalp/hair.
  • excuse me sweetheart, in case you didn't we don't have the same hair texture as white people, It is very different. As a result we take care of out hair differently than a white person would. We (especially black women) are not going to wash our damn hair everyday or else it will BREAK, our hair will become DAMAGED and brittle. We don't all have WHITE HAIR, so that means we take care of it differently.
