When I have a true need it is seldom trifling. Now I'm thirsty come to think of it.

Needs are necessities. anything else are wants (desires, fnacies, yens, etc.) Can you live without it? Should you live without it? Will it make life easier, truly? Or just more pleasant and convenient? That's how I figure out what the difference is.

To me, you have described a want. Sometimes I do use the word 'need' when I want something, yes... But a true need is anything but fleeting.
