Little Wing, originally by Jimi Hendrix, has been covered by Derek and the Dominoes (Clapton), Sting, and Stevie Ray Vaughn. That's pretty good company.

A few suggestions: Eruption - Eddie Van Halen Mr. Crowley - Randy Rhoads (Ozzy Osbourne) Satch Boogie - Joe Satriani Far Beyond The Sun - Yngwie Malmsteen Actually, if you can play any/many of the solos of those four guys, you're an excellent guitarist in my book. Granted, this list is limited to rock, but I'm trying to keep it short.

I suggest anything by Michael Angelo Batio. If you can play anything by him than you are definitely more than a excellent guitarist. Otherwise we have Cacaphony, Jason Becker, Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert when he was in Racer X. You did ask for a benchmark for excellent guitarists; if you can play anything by any of these artists, you are ready for anything!
