It depends where you live. It is pretty reasonable where I live, but in larger cities I agree it is ridiculous.

Where I live it is way too expensive. For a Town-House it costs Half a million dollars.

Here in california it is. The city I live in. A 2 bedroom apartment is $1500 and a 3 bedroom house is like $1900-$2100.

It is too high for some. The cost is high due to high demand/low supply and the ability of many people to be able to pay, especially in major cities. Also, the longer you live in the same dwelling, the more likely your rent is less than the person who just moved in next door. Landlords make up some of the maintenance costs by charging a higher rent to new tenants. Another factor is rent control (I learned this from a real estate class). Landlords who own multiple housing units/apartment complexes will charge as much as they can on non-rent controlled units to make up the difference on losses incurred on rent-controlled units.
