  • The saying refers to a scratched record album (vinyl), and scratched record albums skip. They (sometimes) repeat the same things over and over and over again, hence the saying.
  • Before CDs we had vinyl albums and singles, but before the introduction of vinyl in the 1960s records (disks) were made from acetate, a very fragile material which would shatter if not handled with extreme care. Sometimes a record would crack pretty well from side to side and when it was played when it hit the fracture the needle (this was before styluses) would jump to the same part of the groove it was in on the previous revolution, repeating over and over again the same section. So sounding like a broken record is saying the same things over and over again.
