  • If you don't count door-to-door selling as a child, my first was a part-time farmhand (at 14). Nah, I wasn't impressed by it. Shame, too. Looking back, it was one of my most enjoyable jobs.
  • I was 14 when I got the job "chore boy" at a local guest ranch. I had to help saddle horses, milk cows, slop pigs, which included cooking all the kitchen food garbage for them and help feed all the livestock that lived on the ranch. I was also required to help in the kitchen when the cooks needed help, and wash dishes and pots and pans for them as well as mop floors after each meal. I didn't make very much money that summer, and I worked my butt off, but I remember it as a fun summer. That was the summer of 1960. 2/25/24
