It is an allergic reaction to the drug Hydrocodone. It is most likely OK to continue taking it. Although as always you should consult your physician. I'm not sure why it makes your skin itch but this side effect seems to be very common among people who take or have taken Vicodin.

Most narcotics have an itchy effect. I took Tylenol 4, which is codiene and tylenol, one time, and I started itching everywhere, from the top of my head(Felt like it was on fire) to the bottoms of my feet. Thats the worst reaction I've had to narcotics. Vicodin just makes my nose and face itchy.

That is a sign of an allergy. You should stop taking it and call a pharmacist or doctor. If you feel like you are having trouble breathing go to the ER immediately.
-
You may be allergic and should check with your Doctor before taking any more. Just to be safe, I'll hold onto those for you...

Believe it or not, the codeine med he prescribed didn't get rid of the cough, but vicodin did. I just have a funky body and immune system, I guess. I'm willing to put up with the itching so I can get a few hours of sleep. I've had an anaphalactic reaction to another drug before, and this is definitely nothing like that. Thanks for your concern and your suggestions.

I am allergic to pain killers and I itch very badly and vomit non stop. Consult a doctor if it gets bad.

Thanks. I'm doing quite well now with the management of it. I'm just grateful to be alive. I had cancer in 1995, and have several problems due to chemo attacking my immune system as well as the cancer. I also have neurological problems that are probably not related. I have very good doctors, and I try to do as much as I can when I'm feeling relatively good. I'm just used to it now that this is the way it is. I feel much better now that I'm accepting it, and doing what I have to do to feel the best I possibly can. I even forget sometimes that I'm sick now, so that's really cool. Thanks for your kind words.

All opiates make your skin itch. I would be more concerned about becoming addicted to it.
-
Most opiates cause a histamine release in the body to a certain degree.
-
Hydrocoden is better.
-
I've had that happen with any narcotic I've been given. I've been told that you need to drink a lot of water while taking them. It's supposed to cut down on the itching.
-
some of these people DO NOT know what they are talking about. the itch is not caused by an allergic reaction. the drug causes your nerves to be temporarily paralized but they continue to try and fire at the neurons. this is why there is an itch. this drug basically plays with your nervous system and will eventually damage it if taken for too long. it could also cause your body to respond differently to histamines than it normally does. but itching DOES NOT mean your allergic to it. most everyone itches when taking this med. and for everyone who post answers.. CHECK YOUR SOURCES!!! why would you want to give someone the WRONG answer..especially when it is about something soo important as your health.

occasional side effect ,usually mild ,discontinue if severe . consult physician ,

I have a herniated dick. And am trying to avoid surgery with epidurals and spinal therapy.I have discussed addiction with my Dr...and feel I am Ok there. But I itch all over. Is there anything I can do for the itching? Thank you Marie mimmie-2@sbcglobal.net

It is NOT an allergic reaction, it is exactly as throwingbuckets explained. It is normal to itch if you take enough of it, and some opiates make you itch more than others. I've came home from the hospital after a painful surgery with red hives all over my back and sides from itching after needing so much morphine for the pain. The doctors and nurses will tell you it's just a side effect from opiates...do you really think they would let me lay there and have severe allergic reactions in a fragile post-op state? Some people actually LIKE the itch you get from opiates...LoL... The people posting that it is an allergic reaction are tragically misinformed, and shouldn't be posting about something they know nothing about.

Oh, sure! To take more Vicodin to get over the itching that the other Vicodin gave you
-
I had a severe back injury and was prescribed Morphine for it. I was supposed to take one 30mg tablet every four hours 7 days a week. I itched so bad from it that I flushed somewhere around 130 of them down the toilet after I was on it for 4 days. It's probably the same thing, Just an uncomfortable side effect.
-
I GET THE SAME WAY WITH ANY PAIN MED, I THINK IT'S JUST A REACTION TO THE DRUG. AS LONG AS YOUR BREATHING ISN'T IMPAIRED OR YOU SUDDENLY GET VERY SICK, IT'S JUST AN ANNOYING REACTION. HATE IT TOO!
-
Vicodin causes this undesirable side effect very often , It can be stopped by taking Benedryl (diphenhydramine). A normal dose of 50mgs of Benedryl should stop the itching sensation.
-
I've been on a pretty high dose the past few days & I'm itching my booty off. Its happened before with Vicodin so I knew its no big deal. Just a little annoying. The guy who says 50mg of generic Benadryl may not be correct or it may just not work for everybody. I took 50mg about an hour ago & the itching is still very intense! Oh well, pain gone! I would also like to add that Vicodin is the best thing for that cough you get with the flu, a cold, upper respiratory infections and even allergies! I keep it on hand (just a little, I don't abuse it!). This medication is actually quite safe, versatile & effective. But as always, consult a doctor before you self-medicate for other indications. Back to itching everywhere! Happy March 2009!

Your body does not like it. Don't use it. There are other pain killers if that's what you are going for. Codeine sucks for me too.
-
it simply means that you are an itchy old scallywag and should give the drug to me
