I believe she knew what she was doing. A great series needs to be planned, and this is a great series.

I would be pretty certain that she had the skeleton of the story from day one, however, small side stories and details may have been included as she was going along
-
There is no way she just sat down and churned these out without any forethought or planning. There were things mentioned in passing in the earlier books that played important parts later. It would be nearly impossible to have laid such a rich groundwork without taking time to think it through first.

I remember reading an interview somewhere that a long while ago, before she started writing the last book, she had allready written the final paragraph, so she obviously had it somewhat planned out though not completely i'm sure. SHe knew she was going to write seven books in total and she new what the ending would be. I mean in all books it's about the same thing- Harry Potter is about to die adn he's the under dog and everyone hates him at the begining of the novel and suddenly he becomes the hero at the end. Good books but repetitive plots

Judging from the writing, I would say that for each book she wrote, she knew what would happen about two or three books down the line with a vague idea as to how she would end it. However, I get the impression that the concept of the deathly hallows was close to completely unplanned, don't you?

well at least the first book she said she based it off of her childhood. her and her friends acted like they were the people from the book.
