  • Polygyny was commonplace for centuries, perhaps millennia, in very many cultures. Our modern situation - legally restricted to monogamy - has been around for relatively few years.

  • Before contact, it was pretty common for men in my culture to marry sisters. The padres came though and the old timers had to conform to the new way. I think it is still permissible in Islamic nations for a man to marry up to 4 wives too.

  • Polygamy was very common in most cultures of the world at one time. It is the most spoken of form of marriage in the Old Testament of the Bible and also spoken of in the New Testament. Polygamy was never removed by the Lord God.

Most people think all polygamy is Mormon based where as there is a large Christian polygamy movement. (See The Truth Bearer). Polygamy is mainly a convenience help. The more hands to help make the job easier to do. In the Bible it says happy is the man with many children (Psalms 127:4,5) A woman can have only so many children. It is also the easiest way to fulfill the Lord God's command to replenish the world. Man not the Lord God made polygamy bad and a sin.
