  • Quincunx is Latin for five-twelfths, from the words quinque (five) and uncia (twelve), originally referring to a coin worth 5/12 of the Roman coin 'Aes'. This became applied in a fashion to mean "an arrangement of five things in a square or rectangle with one at each corner and one in the middle", as in the side five of a die. Why this became the term for such an arrangement (4 square and one in the center) is completely unclear. The best explanation is that early Greek coins used this formation on their #5 coins. This may be partially due to Greek mysticism.
