I've always wanted to visit South Africa, and also have wanted to visit ROurke's Drift, etc. since I'm inot military history, but I've seen the news stuff with people being mugged at knifepoint in the middle of the day on the streets and it is a bit unsettling to think about visiting when you can't feel safe on the streets in the middle of the day.

Its such a shame, and i hope it doesnt put people off visiting SA as its the most beautiful country in the world. I used to live in JHB for 10 years and came back to UK for that very reason, 5 years after i returned i took my son who was born there for a holiday and we were practically prisoners in my sisters house, i was so scared to go out just the two of us (my son was only 6 at the time). There are so many lovely places and countries round about SA to visit, i luckily saw most of them, I still have family there and would love to go back, but the areas i lived in are now inhabited mostly by black people and ive been advised not to even dive through these areas now. Unfortunately i do think the crime rate will put visitors off, but hey crime rates are bad in most cities, eg New York, London etc... so go on give it a try just keep away from the 'worst' areas! You wont regret it.

Nope :-) Going to visit for about 1 month next year in Dec, I lived there 2 years prior. The crime is higher then here (US) but if you use common sense you are just fine. I mean I was probably the only white guy in umlazi at 8pm walking the streets. haha got some strange looks when i did. - I should add that the people I knew who lived in umlazi were shocked because I did not act the way they thought I should. Even they were scared at night.

Actually, I was planning to visit at one time, didn't know about the crimes. Very sad.

I am not aware of the murder rate in South Africa, though I would visit in a second. It seems like an interesting country to visit, and am not swayed by the unlikely danger that might or might not happen.

The murder/crime rate might be higher than most places but that will never stop me going back.People visit Beirut, so I will visit Cape Town. I stay away from JHB though. There is so much risk and no more that I will take.

I'm living here for 6 months, 6 weeks in and no incidents. We take sensible precautions but we still go out and things like that. It's not a big enough risk not to come, it's an amazing country. I was scared of JoBurg too but now I love it. I'm living in Durban for the rest of my time here though.

Sure, after i leave Mexico and the gang wars there over drugs. Africa would be a piece of cake. No thanks.
