Good question. I have three measuring tapes. One is a light steel, 50 foot and I'm guessing about 15 feet. I have a heavy steel 25 foot one that can go about 20 feet without kinking. And I have a 12 foot very light one that can go about 4 feet.

Depends on which tape brand it is. We have one called the Ft Max that extends VERY far, I think at least 18' without kinking. It's very wide so that helps.
