    Depends on which hardwood you are talking about. Oak is harder than alder, and maple is harder than oak.

    After spending time in the Ukraine with 3 elderly beavers, we mulled your question, What follows is only a overview of our findings....True hardness of wood is gauged in "toothings".. This is gauged by the wear and tear on teeth as a beaver gnawls.....We found BY FAR, the hardest wood is in the Petrified Forest.
