I had all the wrong majors and all the wrong jobs. But, I still am not sure what I want to do with my life. I want to do so much. Why do we have to narrow it down to one or two things?

I did a lot of voluntary work, enjoyed helping people and I still help people in my paid work today. You need to think about what you enjoy and can this be used in a job? I also like English and use both communication and helping others/the social aspect in my job.Maybe see a careers adviser as well, they help for some!

I pretty much just let life decide for me. Except for things like marriage, jobs, and kids. Those things I decided for myself. I just went with my heart for the most part. Now, however, I usually rely on God's guidance. I must say that he does a far better job of running my life than I do. I'm not talking about kooky, "God told me to do this" stuff. I'm talking about listening to the gentle nudging from the Holy Spirit that lets me know the right direction. Sometimes it may take a few wrong turns before I finally chose the right path for me; but usually, I do get there.

Through a series of trial and error.

I was not so sure what I wanted to do. But I always love fashion, designing for self and others, giving fashion advice; and somehow every job I got I turned toward fashion. Here is an example I worked for an air-conditioning company and end up designing dresses for the owner's daughter’s for the beauty pageant. And now I am full time Fashion designer/Fashion Stylist. If you have passion for anything, go for it. Do what you love and get paid for it, what could be better than that?

Are you kidding? I am almost 56 years old and I still don't know what I want to do with my life!

In my case it was inspiration from someone already in the field. I struggled with depression as a child, and after many years it became serious enough that I was referred for counseling. I can't say that this person solved all my problems -- they weren't solvable -- but the support, learning, and knowledge that someone cared kept me going. As an adult, I still felt a sense of indebtedness which I chose to repay by becoming a therapist.

By finding what I was good at, experimenting with them, setting goals and making moves to achieve them.

I'm almost there. I've done a lot of things and worn many, many hats. Finding out what you want to do boils down to three categories: A natural calling, A hobby or area of reoccurring interest, and choosing based on aptitudes and abilities. Sometimes you can get all three in one career. Take a look around you at the things you have. Look at the books/articles you like to read. If you look close enough a pattern will start to form. For example, If I find I have a natural tendency to explain to others how electronic devices work, and as a hobby build gaming computers, plus have a high mechanical/spatial aptitude I might consider being a mechanical engineer or someone who teaches engineering curriculum.

Still trying to figure that out myself...

I'M ALMOST 36 AND WHEN I FIGURE IT OUT, I'LL LET YOU KNOW.

Trial and error for me. After 28 years in the field of rehabilitation working with handicapped people, I discovered law. It is my second career and one that I wish I had pursued straight out of school. Live and learn, I suppose.
