So, did you lie to him about how you look? If you said you were average, why would he think you were a bombshell? Something doesn't make sense in your question. "you don't look anything like he thinks you do", implies that he got an idea of how you look from somewhere.

I may be confused. You told him you were average looking, but you don't look anything like he thinks you look? What does he think you look like? Are you leaving out some facts? If you would like to meet him, put your best face forward, and go for it. Rejection, while not fun, is a part of life. In the future, be upfront and honest with people. Then you won't have this feeling of hesitation.

What does he look like? I bet he's not Prince Charming. You will probably be both average. What happens if he's not attractive? Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I'd talk with him, tell him what you really do look like, and send a photo before meeting. I get the feeling you were doing some lying about your looks, and that's probably a much bigger issue than your actual looks will be.
