Yes, a minute one at the least. Servers arent responsible for the majority of issues at during a visit (timeliness of food coming out). If they are just very very bad, i still know they have expenses to pay etc and leave a tip and written tips for better service.

If someone deserves it and really puts forth an effort then give them a good tip but if the service is terrible or even below average, then don't tip. People tip because society says they have to tip. I don't believe in tipping automatically, they're just doing their job.

If it was absolutely TERRIBLE, no. I wouldn't. A tip is to reward good service, and although it has become customary to tip in North America, it isn't mandatory. Especially when it comes to crap service.

No I don't. Unless the terrible service is no fault of the servers. There are times when workers call in sick and the restaurant is understaffed. This is usually an obvious situation, and sometimes the waitress will even apologize and tell you they are understaffed. But if I get a lazy "could care less" server, not only do I not tip, I tell them I was dissatisfied with their service. Generally speaking, not only does their service stink, but their attitude is poor as well. Honestly this has not happened to me often.

Yes, but not a good one. Depends on if the bad service had to do with the waiter/waitress. I have a lot of waiter/waitress friends and I understand that sometimes they have off nights, or bad service has nothing to do with them (meal is prepared way too slowly, etc).

Sometimes the service is not the result of the server. It could be that the kitchen is baked up and that the restaurant just has poor management. Same thing with food...bad chef/cook. If things are not up to par, but the server has been nice, I give him/her a decent tip, tell him/her to throw it in their pocket(to avoid tip sharing), then put a $1.00 tip on the charge card with a notation on the bill about my displeasure.

If the food was bad no I wouldn't. It would have to be directly for the SERVICE I received. And then, just not leaving a tip means nothing other than getting the server mad and probably means to them that you are a deadbeat. What DOES mean something is to leave a penny and a nickel. That says "you gave lousy service!" and if it was very bad, tel the manager. Why let them inflict themselves on anybody else? You'd be surprised how sometimes you are rewarded when you let a manager know something like that. Managers need to know these things. And thenit would also help yu to become clear if it was their fault or the kitchen's

I would tip if I had very good service but not if it is bad. They are paid to serve so if they do it well, they get a good tip, if they don't they don't. Here in England it isn't as customary to do so as in other countries

If the restaurant is very busy, or the waitperson has good reason for less than good service, (usually they will explain/apologize for whatever is causing it) something that is not his/her fault, I will leave the customary tip. If the service is lousy because the waitperson is just not "up to snuff" I will leave a nickle or dime, which to me, is worse than no tip. Once the service was so bad I left a note on a napkin that said "Tip: Customers should not have to obtain their own refills from the beverage station, customer should be asked if he/she is finished before you remove their plate.."etc. It was a pretty long list of should nots. I also complained to the management..something that is very rare for me.

Yeah, I'd leave $1.00, I think that makes them more upset then to leave nothing. And then I would complain to the manager.

Yes, I would still leave a tip - I work in the service industry and know that sometimes bad service is just bad luck. I know how nice it is to recieve a tip after a job you know you didin't do too well so I do it when I can. Although I may not eat at that particular establishment again for some time after - if the service is bad again? then I wouldn't tip and would most likely never eat there again

No. I generally only tip when the service is exceptionally good, but it's not such a big thing over here though. In America they expect tips, I think it's actually part of their wage or something. Here in England a tip is just an added bonus. I used to be a waitress and we'd always just spend our tips on a few drinks in the pub after work.

NO! I used to be a srever, so I do not feel bad about saying this, either. I am in the US, and many times 'service' doesn't seem anything more than a headache. I refuse to tip bad service. I feel that all that does is encourage bad service. IMO I feel that I am a good tipper, as long as a recieve satisfactory service. I don't feel that I am unreasonable, if the resturant is packed and it takes some extra time to have my cocktail refiled - so be it, it's busy. But if I sit at a table for 20 minutes with no contact from staff of any kind you better believe that will affect how much the tip is - if I choose to leave any at all.

Yes, I do. I was a waitress for over 10 years and I know that sometimes bad service can result in things that a patron has no idea of...however, I would not return.

It depends on where the service is breaking down. If the kitchen is backed up or the server is overloaded by too many tables, I don't take it out on the server. I ask to speak to the manager. If the server disappears or is at the side chatting with other co-workers or is rude, then no, I don't tip or don't tip as much.

Yes, the worst tip I ever left was $1. The waiter got the orders wrong, spilled the drinks, looked like a slob and worse of all was staring at my lady friend.
