  • There is good criteria for flagging a question as nonsense. A question should be flagged as nonsense if; . It is unanswerable due to the fact that it makes no sense . It comprises of chat speak and vaguely understandable grammar . It is not a question, but a statement. If your question conformed to one of the above criteria, then it was rightfully flagged. However, some people moderate solely for points nowadays, and they don't care what they moderate, just as long as they get the points in the bag.
  • 1) Here are the criteria as they are: Some very important references from AB-Rich, please read in particular his own answers! (Some other topics addressed): "Why should I read the Answerbag Moderation Style Guide?" http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/99335 "What is Answerbag's policy on question style?" http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/99337 "When should I flag an answer or question as 'nonsense'?" http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/99372 "When should I flag an answer or question as 'spam/offensive'?" http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/99373 "When should I flag a question as 'wrong category'?" http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/99374 "Can a question be placed in more than one category?" >>> NO! http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/99376 "When should I flag a question as a duplicate?" http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/99401 A question could also be rejected for other reasons: - "asking for and/or promising points in questions is a violation of Answerbag policy" http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/175023 Nonsense flags on fill-in-the-blank question are not always accepted (but I think, *very* often, so I would rather not use them): "Did you know that any question which has a fill in the blank is considered as nonsense according to Answerbag policy?" http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/419233 Look particularly at this answer: http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/1469380 2) Here a discussion and some ideas about how I think that the criteria could be better. >>> It should be a question, not just a statement. Comments: better use a question mark, too. Tightly related or dependent included questions can be tolerated. >>> It should be written mostly in English. Comments: Foreign or nonsensical languages will only be accepted for a valid reason, usually for the reason of asking for a translation. Some slang and some dialect of English could be accepted, as long as they stay more or less understandable. Beware: you must not understand every single word! >>> A completely nonsensical grammar. (Part of point 2) Comments: It could eventually be the case if a big error happens, such as stopping a sentence in the middle for such an assumable reason as a wrong clicking of the submit button, or a too long question. However, as long as the question is long enough to be sensibly answered, it would not be sensible to flag it, I think. A poor grammar should be avoided, but I think it should (and will) normally *not* be a reason for the "nonsense" flagging. I think also that the validity of the grammar should be (and is) more determined according to real life criteria than to schoolteacher criteria. >>> It should be understandable. This is a hard one! Sometimes a question becomes a lot of answers, so it looks like it would be understandable. Why reject it then? Be very cautious with that one! The fact that you do not understand it does not mean that nobody will understand it, even if you believe being an expert on the subject. Maybe many will understand it. Here is a particular point where I am not sure that the staff moderator is always right. >>> It should be answerable. Please be cautious with that one! As there is no possibility to comment a question directly, some people interested by a question could eventually use their "answer" to first ask some precisions. I would suggest letting the asker clarify their question. If it is flagged at once, they will often not understand and eventually generate some noise to get it clarified. A quite unclear point, I think, is if AB can use some creativity. This applies also for many issues of fill-in-the-blank questions. >>> Sometimes the issue has been raised if the "Congratulation Answerbaggers" make sense. I think they don't make sense as question. Imagine this: Q: "Would you like to join me and Congratulate XXX who has just made YYY?" What would you answer? "No" is not an option, a plain "Yes" neither. The only option is to elaborate a little, and to give some words of congratulation, if you like the person. But I think those questions should stay, because they have a social function. I am not sure you should be allowed to get so many points for asking such a question.
