For a 28 day cycle, the average time for ovulation is day 14. Sperm can live in the vagina for as long as a week, so having unprotected sex in the seven days before ovulation can result in pregnancy if the sperm find a cozy place to hide and wait for the egg. Every woman is different, and sometimes your body doesn't do what the textbooks say it's supposed to. If you're having sex and you don't want to get pregnant, then use protection every time.
