Take the dog to a vet. A course, almost hacking cough is also a sign of an advanced heart murmur.

Vet of course.

It could be something as simple as a hair at the back of the throat, or as complex as ALLERGIES. The Tick medication is POISON...it kills ticks. Ticks are bad, we don't want THEM, but poison, which is absorbed through your dog's skin is also bad and makes many dogs sick. If it does not clear up within 48 hours, DO TAKE THE DOG TO THE VET. Just to be on the safe side. Consider also switching to NEEMS OIL for treatment of ticks and fleas. It works and it is NON toxic. You can find it at many health food stores, such as Whole Foods, and you can find it on line. It is usually about $12 to $15 a bottle. If ticks and fleas are bad where you live I would apply it (one to two drops) twice a week. There is also Neems shampoo, and you can make a spray by mixing it (and shaking the bejesus out of the bottle) with water in a spray bottle. I've used it on puppies and it was approved for our neighbor to use last summer when she was pregnant...to keep skeeters off of her at night outside. Children can also use it. Rub it well though your dog's coat when you apply it. (safe too for cats and horses).

Stright to the vet , if in any doubt about the health of any animal, have them checked out.

Dont listen to these people heart murmurs for a cough? your doggie prolly has kennel cough,it is very simple to treat at home. depending on the size of your dog, my dog is 10 pounds and i give him a teaspoon of robitussin dm (it has to be this brand cuz other brands they are sensitive too) every 6 hours or as needed.

The guy who says it's just kennel cough--obviously not a vet and not realizing that the reasons for a cough can vary. The heart murmur and cough issue is a real one. Our dog is nearly 14 (golden ret.) and was just diagnosed after all these years with a heart murmur. The vet said you will know the heart murmur is becoming an "issue" when he begins coughing when he is lying down. In the last few weeks this has started. It has to do with pulmonary edema, or fluid building up in the lungs. I am very worried, and realize that a 14 year old golden retriever is going to start having some problems, I don't want to be in denial here, but I must say I am upset and sick about it.
