What kills more brain cells, marijuana or alcohol?

    It's not marijuana. According to the NORML Foundation, marijuana does not kill brain cells. There has been evidence of structural changes to brain tissue in some studies, but actual cell death was not observed.

    Alcohol kills more brain cells, simply because marijuana does not. Marijuana only acts as an inhibitor and reduces the ability of your brains neurotransmitters to function. It does this at the synapsis, by impeding the neurons ability to send neurochemicals across the synaptic gap.

    Killing brain cells is not a pre-requisite for getting `high.' Marijuana contains a chemical which substitutes for a natural brain chemical, with a few differences. This chemical touches special `buttons' on brain cells called `receptors.' Essentially, marijuana `tickles' brain cells.

    The legal drug alcohol also tickles brain cells, but it will damage and kill them by producing toxins (poisons) and sometimes mini-seizures. Also, some drugs will wear out the buttons which they push, but marijuana does not.

    Marijuana acts as a similar neurotransmitter in the brain called anandamide, which is an endogenous cannabinoid. Anandamide receptors have been shown to be involved in the management of short term memory. Studies are under way to explore what role anandamide plays in human behavior, such as eating and sleep patterns, and the part it plays in pain relief. Alcohol is a GABA inhibiting drug along with partial NMDA antagonist properties and many more. The NMDA antagonist properties can be damaging to the brain and the chemicals that are oxidized afterwards(acetyldehyde) is toxic to the body which causes hangovers along with dehydration taking part in it. Alcohol may be much more damaging to the brain, while cannabis has the exact opposite effect.

    The brain acts differently to each substance.
    Alcohol inhibits the brains functioning speed and slows reaction as well as offsets the equilibrium therefore leading to falling, confusion, and poor coordination and slurred speach.
    Marijuana slows the synapsis' ability to send and receive messages, leading to drowsiness and lack of motion in the body. Each does its damage to the body but only alcohol kills brain cells marijuana actually promotes brain cell growth

    Some people are too niave to bare, and as said above, watch too much television.

    Ask ANYONE who smokes weed regularly, and ask them how good their memory is. Smoking Weed ABLITERATES your memory if you smoke it for a given amount of time, I had an eidetic memory before I started, by the time I quit ten years later I felt like that guy from the film 'momento', having to write down everything simply so I didn't forget simply daily tasks. It has only MARGINALLY improved since then too, and that was 2 years ago now...

    Also, don't be a mug and think smoking weed is more 'natural' or 'healthy' than smoking cigerettes...this is absolute tripe...weed is sprayed with ALL SORTS of crap, which believe me, you wouldn't even want to know about. Check this out:

    Marijuana doesn't. Structural changes were observed in brain cells of animals exposed to extremely high doses of pot.

    In moderation alcohol probably won't either. Alcohol damages dendrites — the branched ends of nerve cells that bring messages into the cell.
