A liberal wants all people to be treated the same regardless of their contribution. Believes that "all" people may not be capable of handling their affairs so wants greater government control and involvement. Wants govt to be accountable for minimal public welfare, health care, etc.
-
Personally I define liberal's as "YES" people who are open-minded to anything and Anti-War. I don't know how close that is to the dictionary definition though.

In political terms Liberal means believing in personal freedom and sharing wealth and power fairly. Of course in the United States the meaning of the word has somehow changed to mean somebody with socialistic leanings who must be a danger to society because all socialists are communists, and we all know how dangerous communists are. Give me a break!

Liberal, in describing a person would (to me) mean one who interprets things (like laws or rules) loosely, and sees them as figurative, unimportant, or easily changeable. Politically, they would be more democratic, or leftist, if you will. They would be for any law making the previous one less stringent. You can also use something liberally, meaning you'd use a lot of it, generously.

I guess I think it is tied to the idea of being free, since liberal is obviously linked to the word liberty. Also, to use something liberally is to use it freely, without restriction.

I usually use the word in a political context, so that my definition resembles that of 'lead', discontinuous. . Lead - either to guide others or a dense soft metal. . As an aside, I see where professional writers have taken to using 'lede' to mean the first, attention getting, part of their product. . I'll need to know the context to answer. .
