  • It's not proof. Proof would be finding something. It's likely though, and the numbers are just staggering. To take our galaxy alone (and observations indicate 60 Galaxies in existence for every person on earth), there are approximately 100,000,000,000 (one hundred billion) stars. The recent 'planet finding' efforts have conjectured that stars like the sun, whose metal content is considered typical of stars in our neighborhood, have a 5 to 10 percent chance of having planets. Stars with three times more metal than the sun have a 20 percent chance of harboring planets, while those with 1/3 the metal content of the sun have about a 3 percent chance of having planets. I can't do the maths, but given the numbers, I would say it's almost certain life exists elsewhere. On the 'overkill' part of the question, that depends entirely on whether one considers a 'designer' to exist, and if so, what level of involvement this designer has, and if a 'plan' exists. While people may believe in some sort of devine design, proving it beyond doubt is problematic.
  • Maybe he didn't make the cosmos for us... maybe he made it for his own enjoyment. Artists don't paint for others, they paint for themselves and others just seem to get joy out of it too as a bonus.
  • I think you are referring to the Drake Equation :) It's not unequivocial proof, but statistically... it certainly would be amazing....
  • It's not 'proof', it just makes it probable. Although, its considered that we ourselves are incredibly fortunate to exist, a cosmological fraction closer or further away from the sun would mean that while we might have evolved, we would not have progressed exactly as we have. This would mean that perhaps we wouldn't be discussing this on the internet for example for another good few milennia. I think there is life elsewhere in the universe, and that the vast expanse of the cosmos is a natural equation 'designed' to keep us apart. As far as the presence of a creator is concerned, I cannot begin to beleive in that for one moment. Any creator would need to have a creator itself and this would carry on untill infinity.
